Salt has been used to flavour food since time immemorial. Also it is used as a preservative in several food items. Salt is a staple commodity in every household.  After all, it makes our food palatable.  Anyway, this article is not about what salt does to our food. It’s about the age-old question- which salt is better, pink salt or white salt?

Table Salt (White Salt)A key ingredient for most of our meals, table salt is widely used all across the world.  It is basically a refined form of salt that goes through various purification processes. During purification, refined table salt loses most of its minerals and what is left is sodium chloride. In order to nourish the salt, companies additionally add iodine to these minerals. The added iodine plays a pivotal role in supporting our thyroid health. Moreover, to prevent the clumping of salt particles, companies also use additives in order to make it non-perishable

Himalayan Salt (Pink Salt)

Himalayan salt it is basically a pink-coloured salt extracted from the Khewra Salt Mine, which is located near the Himalayas in Pakistan. Unlike table salt, Himalayan salt is minimally processed and therefore, known as the purest form of salt on the planet. The pink colour of Himalayan salt is due to the presence of a mineral called iron oxide. Moreover, it also contains small amounts of calcium, potassium and magnesium. The sodium content in Himalayan salt is slightly lesser than regular table salt.  Studies suggest that Himalayan salt contains over 80+ minerals, which supports PH balancing, removal of toxins, nutrient absorption, prevention in muscle cramps and so on.

Below highlighted are the nutritional value of both the salts:

While comparing both the salts it is evident that  Himalayan salt has better nutrition levels. However, it does not mean that consuming table salt is bad. Himalayan salt does offer some extra benefits like added minerals and a minimal refining process that makes it a healthier choice. Nutritional differences in both the salts are not that big and can be easily achieved through other food options. However, the difference between the cost is massive, therefore choose your salt according to your budget and convenience.
